At $345 list price it would have been a bargain less than two years ago, even for a DRAMless QLC PCIe 3.0 drive, and it's a DRAM cached TLC PCIe 4.0 drive.
Worth considering if you're building a high-end PC.

NOW they tell me. Although at around $100, the 2 TB 980 Pro seems fine to me. And I still have two M.2 slots left (albeit slightly slower chipset drive ones).
BTW, I'm having doubts about the heat sink that comes with the Ryzen 9 7900. It doesn't take a very high usage percentage to ramp up very high on its fan duty cycle. Unless the pre-applied thermal paste on it is inadequate.

Hmm. It's not overclocking, is it? The 7900 is just a 7900X set to a default TDP of 65W instead of 170W, so if the BIOS isn't keeping that default, the fan will go into overdrive.

Mauser, boxed heatsinks are always only just barely adequate. You should be using something with more fins and a bigger fan. A quick search led to the be quiet pure rock 2 fx, which is about $50 and generally has good reviews. (It has RGB but you can almost certainly disable that if you don't like it.)
I'm using a Noctua nh-u12s chromax on an i5-12600K which has a slightly lower TDP but cools it fine. AMD actually recommends liquid cooling for the AM5 170W processors.

That's generally true, but the heatsink that ships with the 7900 is well-regarded and should be fine for a 65W TDP / 89W max chip.

I missed the missing X there, sorry.
The X series are supposed to run at 90C all day, with (IIRC) spikes to 95 being considered normal. I wonder if that's the same for the non-X version? (FWIW I had a 3600X and for a while I had the aftermarket version of AMD's cooler on it and I found it really annoying because not only did the fan ramp up a lot, but it didn't stay at the same speed--it would constantly go fast then slow, and that made the sound much more annoying. I replaced it with a Hyper 212 Evo which ran a lot more smoothly. On my 5800X I put a 360mm AIO watercooler, which was probably overkill.

I'll have to double check the BIOS settings. Between the BIOS and the AMD and the MSI platform software, there are at least three different things that can turn on "Game Mode" and they do not agree with each other.
